[名詞の所有格＋名詞]vs[名詞＋of＋名詞]

[名詞の所有格＋名詞](Elizabeth Taylor's eyes)が[名詞＋of＋名詞](the eyes of Elizabeth Taylor)にいつも書き換え可能なわけではなく、一応３つのルールがある。下の順序は(1)から(2)そして(3)で、その順序が崩れると不自然な句になりやすい。

(1) 人を表す名詞、または体の部分を表す名詞が先行する：Tom, actress, eye, leg

(2) 人を除く生物は(1)の名詞より後で、(3)の無生物を表す名詞より前：dog, cat

(3) 無生物を表す名詞が一番後ろ：cushion, table

Tom's dogはいいがthe dog of Tomは不自然。 the actress's hairとthe hair of the actressはどちらも可能である。the cat's cushionは自然で、the cushion of the catは不自然。a leg of the tableはいいが、a table's leg は不自然である。

ただし、名詞が他品詞からの派生語であれば例外となる：discovery(動詞discoverより)など多数：Columbus's discovery ― the discovery of Columbus (the discovery of Columbus'sも可能であるが、'sのない方が一般的。Columbus'sの-s'sの発音は-sesと同じ発音)
